Things are a little bit frustrating right now for fans of indie rockers Modest Mouse. Although everyone is happy to hear about some recently announced tour dates for the summer, a new album has allegedly been in the works for over a year now, and since it has been three years since Modest Mouse released any new music at all, fans are starting to feel that some fresh tracks are long overdue.
That’s not to say that things aren’t moving in the right direction. It can be hard to get things finalized for a new album when the demand for live shows is so strong. Modest Mouse are at their best on the live stage, and with these new dates coming up, at least fans on the east coast (or those who are willing to travel there) will get their Modest Mouse fix. But for fans who won’t be able to make it out for those shows, the question remains – when is the new album coming out?
After a string of news stories in April of last year, the band have since been oddly quiet about their studio efforts. At that time the big rumor was that rapper Big Boi was working with Modest Mouse in a production role, and that both sides were extremely excited about the new songs that were coming out of the collaboration. Since then, however, neither Modest Mouse nor Big Boi have said much about the album. Even on Modest Mouse’s official site, their news feed is mostly about upcoming live dates and reissues of older work.
The last time Modest Mouse fans were treated to a full album was back in 2007, with the release of We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. That album, too, suffered from delays; it was initially slated to be released in 2006, but was inexplicably pushed back to April of 2007 for reasons the band did not disclose. Once it was out, however, all was forgiven, as most fans loved the new material and were grateful for the album. The attitude at the time was “better late than never,” and once again fans are having to hold on to the hope that a new album will be released at some point.
The 2009 EP No One’s First and You’re Next at least gave fans a little something to keep them occupied between Modest Mouse albums. Although the songs on the EP weren’t new, there were some B-sides and unreleased tracks that most people hadn’t heard. To appease collectors, three 7-inch vinyl singles were also released, but as you can imagine, both the EP and the singles failed to hit shelves until after their scheduled release dates.
With any luck, Modest Mouse will be able to find some time between live shows to put the finishing touches on the new album, and hopefully let fans know something about a release date. Until then… we just have to wait.
