Feist at The Majestic Theater [Show Reviews]

Feist at the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas

The dream of the 90s may be alive in Portland, but the memories of 2007 are still alive in Feist. Her show on Tuesday at The Majestic Theater brought back recollections of iPod commercials, illegal music downloads and girl power music – all things that very much resonated with the packed house at this gorgeous venue.

Feist started her show with a scream of “HEYYYY DALLLLAS,” and immediately implored the crowd to get to its feet. Her first few songs were upbeat, performed in front of a massive projection screen that looked like the desktop of someone’s Macbook Pro (and honestly, maybe it was.) Feist was accompanied by a trio of motley musicians and another three backup singers, who were apparently members of the Bennington, VT-based group Mountain Man. The mix of sounds created a pretty kick ass sound, made only better by Feist’s incredible voice.

Okay, fine, at points it felt like we were in a drum circle at a campfire. There was some… interesting… interpretive dancing in the audience, and Mountain Man had some unique capes they’d wear from time to time. That aside, Ms. Feist herself was adorable, entertaining and a seriously incredible musician, who was constantly involving the crowd in the performance (+1!)

As a side note, it seems to us like Feist is becoming this generation’s Tori Amos. Her lyrics feature super feminist, girl power undertones (even a girl version of “We Will Rock You”) and were illustrated with some very suggestive projected images, which almost felt like a sex ed class. It’s good to see that Feist is back, and that’s she’s definitely found her way. Rock on, girl!

Disclosure: our besties (right guys, BFFs?) at Universal hooked us up with tickets and a giveaway for this show. So, there’s that. But we’re still wicked honest, because that’s how we roll.

Like Sisyphus was forever doomed to push a boulder up a mountain, I'm forever doomed to be an outsider looking in to the world of indie music. From my roots as a showtune-singin', country-music lovin', pop-music dancin' kid, I take a totally weird take on today's shows, culture, fashion & scene.
