This weekend’s Fort Worth Music Festival is going to be… awesome. Seriously awesome. Two days of great bands and not a rain shower in sight (okay, that second part isn’t surprising.) And if you haven’t taken advantage of the Groupon offers yet, we mayyy have a chance for you to score some free tickets (check the end of this post for info.)
But first! To the bands!
5. Meat Puppets – Friday @ 6:45
These dudes will bring you back to the 80s and 90s (ah, the glory days) with plenty of songs that will make you go “hey… I think I’ve heard this on the radio!” Or maybe you’re a Meat Puppets superfan. In which case you hate me right now. Sorry about that.
Anyway, these guys influenced the likes Nirvana, Pavement and Soundgarden, so they’re like the grandfathers of good. Grab a beach towel, some beers, and ring in the weekend, because it’s flashback time.
4. Calhoun – Saturday @ 3:45
I’ll be honest, I hadn’t really listened to Calhoun before I saw the lineup for the Fort Worth Music Festival, but one listen to their track “Indian Melody” and I was hooked. Heck, I’m even ditching out on Seryn’s set to check them out on Saturday afternoon. Their sound is definitely a bit poppy, but harmonies and catchy beats lead me to believe that they’ll put on a great live set. Give ‘em a listen below and let me know what you think!
3. Whiskey Folk Ramblers – Friday @ 4:15
If you’re in the mood for gettin’ down on Friday, it’s a musical happy hour with Whiskey Folk Ramblers, the first set of the festival. Sure, you might have to leave work early (cough, cough), but it’s worth it. The Whiskey Folk Ramblers play music that may as well be the soundtrack of Fort Worth – folky, Americana tunes mixed with some killer guitar.
2. Oil Boom – Saturday @ 1:30
These boys can rock. Just off the release of their debut album in May, I’m totally ready for Oil Boom to rock my socks off on Saturday afternoon. If you don’t believe me, check the video below from their July performance at the Kessler. If you’re not chair dancing halfway through, you might be a zombie.
1. Dawes – Saturday at 7:30
I would buy tickets just for this. Seriously. Sure, they’re coming back through town on the 13th (and I’ll be there too), but I just love me some Dawes. Taylor Goldsmith’s vocals, the goodness that is their latest album, their lyrics – it all comes together in a giant puddle of Dawestasticness. And I swear that’s a word.
And now, a giveaway! (For those of you that skipped the article, well played.) We have 2 two-day general admission tickets to give to one lucky winner. All you have to do to enter is:
- Vote for us for a Dallas Observer Music Award - best blog, question #37 (honor system, but if you don’t do it, karma will find you.)
- Leave a comment with the band you want to see most at the Fort Worth Music Festival – need help deciding? Full lineup here.
